Naida Glavish Update:

As we all know there continues to be a gap between Māori and non-Māori smoking rates.  Everyone needs to do their part to change the current situation. There needs to be legislative measures put into place and there needs to be co-ordinated local action, great health promotion work,  advocacy and innovative cessation services across the motu. There is some good work being done by the sector and we need to keep this going, let’s not lose momentum.

A Tupeka kore Aotearoa remains part of the iwi leaders priorities under the whānau ora banner, and to compliment this we are really  happy to hear that there is now a Waka Tupeka Kore Māori forum where Māori in the sector nationally are coming together to strategize as a sector, this will strengthen the work ahead of us all.  It is also great to hear that Māori consumer action groups are starting.  Smokers are key to getting us to 2025, our whānau even when they smoke can be the leaders of change at every level.   Every part of the puzzle is important in order to reclaim our tupeka kore past,  I look forward to continuing to work on this kaupapa and attending a Waka Tupeka Kore hui to ensure we are collectively progress the needs of Māori.
